Giselle
This beautiful, soulful-faced early humpbacked Steiff girl, Giselle, dates from c.1908 and has been much loved in her lifetime. She doesn't have a lot of blonde mohair remaining, and her earbutton is long gone, but she still has original shoebutton eyes, along with a tan-stitched nose and mouth. Her muzzle has darkened with age, giving her a bruised appearance.
Giselle is 40 cms (16") tall, and stuffed mostly with woodwool, which has settled in both arms. Her pads are felt replacements, and her feet are cardlined. She has all her claws, and a a fragile ankle, with sewn repairs. There's also a darn close to her arm joint at the front, and also to the side of her other leg. Overall, though, she's a strong bear for her vast age.
Wearing her Victorian cotton dress and bonnet, with vintage underslip and old bell ratle, Giselle is a precious character, and her name is Old German for 'pledge'.
