Aves
A gorgeous, blonde mohair humpbacked Steiff girl with earbutton c.1920s, Aves is 41 cms (16") tall, with original back-painted glass eyes and a tan-stitched nose and mouth that may have been redone some time ago, we're not really sure.
Fully-jointed and filled with woodwool, her pads are felt replacements, and she has all but one of her claws remaining, along with about 50% of her fur, with fairly good coverage at the back. Apart from a small darned repair to the top of her muzzle, and the stuffing having settled slightly around her neck and hump, she's in lovely condition and is a good, strong bear with the sweetest expression.
Aves is wearing her Victorian cotton dress trimmed with lace, and decorated with an antique corsage of flowers, plus satin shoes. She also carries an old lace handkerchief and brings her organza bag of dried French lavender. Her name is from the Old German meaning 'refuge in war', or the Latin 'bird'.
